The custom boxes market is expanding day by day and is expected to reach a huge market value of USD 74.36 billion by 2033. The stats show there must be something special about custom boxes and considering the overall aspect we can confidently say that packaging materials are one of the major things that have forced the brands to invest in these boxes.

The material used to manufacture the boxes is one of the finest quality materials and has all the attributes that are required to protect the products and store them perfectly. In addition to durability, these materials are food-grade and sustainable.

At our company, you can get multiple options for custom packaging material. From cardboard to kraft, and corrugation to rigid, we have all the options at your disposal.

    Different Types Of Packaging Materials

In the custom boxes market, you can find a large number of packaging materials. Usually, brands prefer paper-based materials for a safe and sustainable option for protecting the products. These materials are manufactured with a combination of soft and hardwood fibres that give remarkable flexibility to your sustainable packaging materials and hence allow you to get the boxes in any shape and style. Some of the common packaging materials are as follows:

    • Kraft
    • Cardboard
    • Corrugation
    • Rigid

However, there are certain products that cannot be packed in paper-based packaging such as liquids and semi-solids. For such products, we have an excellent alternative that may not be biodegradable but is sustainable as we can recycle them time and again. This material is known as mylar which is a type of polyethylene. You can see the specific requirements of your products and select packaging materials to give the best possible protection to your products. Our materials have the following qualities:

    Cardboard

Cardboard is a heavy-duty material that is available in varying degrees of thicknesses. Cardboard is made of wood fibre and has excellent flexibility. Not only this, cardboard is one of the most economical paper-based materials and a perfect option for brands looking for custom cardboard printed boxes. Cardboard is made of wood fibres and recycled material. Some of the subtypes of cardboard are as follows:

    • Solid bleached sulphate is made from virgin wood pulp and is coated white on both sides which is an excellent option for printed boxes.
    • The uncoated recycled board is a less costly option as it is manufactured with used material and has greyish fibre.
    • The coated recycled board is made from used paper and is coated to improve its strength and durability.
    • Clay-coated newsback is a type of coated recycled material that is clay-coated for better print quality.

    Printability

The printability of cardboard depends upon the surface texture and coating. To make these recyclable packaging materials easy to print we first apply primer to the surface that enhances print adhesion. After this, we apply clay or UV coating on the material which makes the surface more receptive.

    Corrugation

Corrugated material is a sub-type of cardboard. In this material instead of one layer a minimum of three layers of materials are used. The upper and lower layers of the material are plain, while the middle layer has flutes. The flutes in the material provide extra strength and cushioning capacity to the boxes. In packaging materials for shipping corrugated packaging material is the top choice. Aside from the thickness of flutes, there are three types of corrugated materials based on the number of fluted layers:

    • Single wall material that has one flute
    • Double material has two fluted layers
    • Triple wall material has three fluted layers

    Printability

As cardboard has an uneven surface therefore it is slightly difficult to print on this material. To enhance the printability of corrugated material the liner board is combined with the fluted later. Though offset and digital printing can both be used to print the material flexography is the best option as it works well on uneven surface areas.

    Kraft Materials

Kraft material is one of the most sustainable options to manufacture custom packaging. Custom food boxes such as sandwich boxes or burger packaging are usually manufactured using kraft. Kraft material has high tear resistance and its natural brown color makes it a perfect option for minimalist design. This has the following sub-types:

    • Brown kraft
    • Bleached kraft
    • Clay coated kraft

    Printing

Due to the rough surface of the kraft, printing is slightly difficult on it. Eco-friendly kraft packaging materials are printed with screen and flexography printing methods. In the printing of kraft material, we use thick and vibrant ink so that it can stand out against the dark background.

    Rigid Boards

Rigid material has a wood-like consistency and is mainly made of chipboard. Chipboard is compressed in rigid material to enhance the sturdiness of the material. Recycled paper fibre is compressed into dense sheets. This material is usually used as custom gift boxes or to manufacture luxury rigid packaging boxes. The common types of rigid material are:

    • Greyboard is a recycled material
    • Solid board is manufactured with multiple layers of paper pulp
    • Mount board is a stiff material that is used in the manufacturing of framing and display boxes

    Printability

Due to the high density and stiffness of rigid material, it is slightly difficult to print. To make the material easy to print we apply a pre-printing coating that smooths the surface and makes the material capable of high-quality prints.

    Mylar Material

Mylar is one of the most commonly used materials in the packaging of liquids and semi-solids all around the globe. The flexibility and lightweight nature of Mylars combined with durability make it the best option for long-lasting and unique packaging.

    Printability

Mylar material is printed via different printing methods but offset printing is not very suitable due to the flexible nature of mylar bags. However, other printing methods such as offset and screen printing are ideal options for printing mylars.
